Opening night with the Bakersfield Symphony will take you on a journey through music that strikes to the heart of American music and literature. The concert begins with the overture to one of George Gershwin’s most popular Broadway musicals, Girl Crazy. After this energetic opener, the orchestra is joined by the Bakersfield Master Chorale, Bakersfield College Chamber Singers, and critically acclaimed vocal soloists Kimberly Jones and Bill McMurray for a moving performance of Robert Paterson’s Whitman’s America. The choirs and vocalists join the orchestra again as the concert closes with Porgy and Bess: A Concert of Songs – a piece that takes us through the emotional highs and lows of Gershwin’s opera, Porgy and Bess, culminating in an exciting and jazz-inspired finale you won’t want to miss!
