When the dust bowl roared across the central plains of Texas and Oklahoma in the 1930’s, many families packed up and moved west to California. Those families may have left the plains, but they did not leave behind their love of country music.
A few years later as country music evolved, Bakersfield became an unlikely birthplace for a new sound – The Bakersfield Sound. The genre is most commonly described as a crisp mix of guitar, drums, fiddle, and steel guitar - a departure from the string orchestras and studio production tricks used in Nashville. The most well-known Bakersfield Sound artists include Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and Don Rich.
