The Bakersfield Sound

In the 1950's and 60's Bakersfield became an unlikely birthplace for a new sound – The Bakersfield Sound. The genre is most commonly described as a crisp mix of guitar, drums, fiddle, and steel guitar - a departure from the string orchestras and studio production tricks used in Nashville. The most well-known Bakersfield Sound artists include Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and Don Rich.
